Hagia Sophia of Constantinople

Istanbul, Turkey

The Hagia Sophia basilica, built in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian, is one of the major monuments of ancient Constantinople, today Istanbul. A former Byzantine cathedral that became a mosque following the Ottoman conquest of 1453, then a museum in the 20th century, it has been dedicated to Islamic worship again since 2020. Its immense dome and mosaics bear witness to the meeting of Byzantine and Ottoman heritage.
